Civil War Era Map of the South Shows Percentage of Slave Ownership, County by County

Another fascinating map find reveals the county-county percentage of slave ownership in the south during the mid 1800s during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. Some counties in South Carolina reported more than 80% slave ownership. Practically NO counties owned slaves at all along the Appalachian mountain range, also known as the Blue Ridge mountains, and the region has kept it’s sense of easy going “live and let live” attitudes ever since, becoming a modern day mecca for gay men and women, intellectuals, artists, writers and musicians.
